Message to “mainstream” Jews: We don’t all look like Woody Allen or Barbra Streisand. GET OVER IT!

Okay, maybe this is some of my damnhowdidtheweekendflybysoquicklyagain angst talking, but I’m just gonna run with it.
Saw an article in American Jewish Life Magazine about Esti Mamo, an Israeli model. She happens to be Ethiopian, and that of course becomes the focus of the story.
This is yet another instance of “Whoa! Who would have thought that this person of color would be Jewish?” Honestly, it’s so ridiculous. Obviously there are Jews of color. There have been for all of time, and there are many of us around now, actually (in this country, and in Israel). Yet, always this shock and surprise. The “Jewish community” (how much of a community is it when so many of us are not included?) needs to get over it.
Maybe once it does, it will see Jews of color joining their congregations, getting involved in their organizations… I have been in a lot of conversations with Jewish organization professionals who wonder why they don’t see many of us. Well, when the majority of the “broader/mainstream Jewish community” constantly makes Jews of color seem like strange occurences, we tend to want to run away from that, rather than join in and deal with all of the awkwardness and questions. Who needs to feel like a freak in a place where one should be welcomed and considered to be a fellow “countryman”? I’m pretty tired of it, but the truth is that there is no room for this weariness. There is a lot of work to be done (admittedly, I used to be active in efforts around issues of diversity in Judaism and I left it due to my already full plate…but to be honest, on top of that, it seems like there is very little change. It has been about six years since I was active, and the same need to create visibility alone is still very much present).
Hot Israeli supermodel — the description conjures up certain images of tanned brunettes with chiseled features and a look that says, “I’m trained with heavy weapons; don’t try anything.” Naomi Campbell or Tyra Banks, arguably the most famous of black supermodels, is not what you might picture. Nevertheless, Esti Mamo is the latest fashion-clad sabra to come out of the Holy Land, and she looks more Naomi than Upper West Side JAP. The 24-year-old is a member of Israeli’s Falasha community of Ethiopian Jews.
So, not only do I read this article and feel estranged because a fellow woman of color is not being included as a natural part of the Jewish community, but the words are directed at an audience — the Jewish community — which obviously does not include my kind of thinking. The author says that someone who looks like Esti “…is not what you might picture” to be a Jewish person. Oh really? Who says? I wouldn’t naturally assume she wasn’t! Good work author, you just pointed out that the “you” here is just as close-minded and ignorant as can be. The “you” refers to a group of people who would assume that Israeli looks like olive-skinned and brunette, and Esti Mamo could not be Jewish. I don’t think like that, so clearly, I am not part of the audience. For which I am happy.
Jewish people can be Jamaican, white, Indian, Puerto Rican, Chinese, black… they can be anyone. Get with it already, and absorb that. Jews don’t all look like Woody Allen or Barbara Streisand.
(De ja vu. See what I mean? I’ve been delivering the same message over and over. I think it’s that — one — people don’t absorb it, and — two — there aren’t enough of us saying the same thing. If you are interested in helping the cause and getting the Jewish community to recognize and be inclusive of diversity, give Ayecha a holler and tell Yavilah Jen sent’cha.

I agree with this article about that not all of us look like woody Allen and Barbara Streisand and they really need to get over it,I get the same looks around were I live because I am hispanic with fair skin but with black hair and dark brown eyes,so people assume jews and gentiles
that how can I be jewish and hispanic,I live in Boro Park Brooklyn in the Hassidic community and I work at Maimonides Medical Center,I heard about the color Jews but I haven’t had the pleasure of talking to one and would love to meet them,to me a jew is a jew regardless of color or background.
thank you
We, at Messianic Temple Beth El in Brooklyn, New York, believe that Jesus whose Hebrew Name is Yahshua is the prophesied Messiah of Israel. He was sent to the “lost sheep of the house of Israel”. The ten lost tribes of Israel that were dispersed all over the world are coming back to Elohim of Israel. We have different people from different ethnic and cultural background who identify themselves as disciples of Yahshua from Nazareth:blacks, hispanics, italians, orientals. But we have one thing in common: the Torah, the Messiah of Israel and the land of Israel.
Those who are interested are welcome to attend our Shabbat services. Shalom

Please do not listen to this “Rabbi.” She has only posted on this site because she believes that, as Jews of color, visitors to this website would be more susceptible to proselytizing by these so called “Jews for Jesus.” This is racist and wrong. These people try to get Jews to abandon their Jewish faith, and are only a type of Christian missionary. Please realize that, although they profess to be Jewish, they do not care for Jewish law, and are wholly Christian. Please ignore their attempts to weaken the Jewish people.
I am a jew, My father was a slave that was brought from africa during the atlantic slave trade. My fathers family always new they were jews they never considerded themselves blolodline africans. My mother is from sicily where their was a huge jewish population so I have israelite blood on both sides of my family. Many europeans jews have a racist attitude to jews of color, sometimes it makes me wonder if they are even real bloodline jews? jews were never racist, when you read the bible they always mixed themselves with people mainly africans. When you read about Israel in the bible it seems they was always travelling to africa or had close ties with hametic peoples. Shalom Managan Ben-Levi
I went to an Ayecha sponsored website on MSN.com seeking to learn more about the Black Jewish/Jews of Color community in America and particularly in my hometown area.
I left a post saying as much. Almost all the responses were not only negative but hostile. The jist was that the white Jewish community are usurpers and only Blacks were genuine Jews.
If this is the general feeling of your community, I find this tragic. Equally tragic to me is that most white Jews know nothing about this vibrant Jewish community alive and well in America.
I hope there is some from friendly middle ground. Mr. Ben-Levi, please know that there are many in the European Jewish community who would thrilled and facinated to know your community exists.
In any event, please know there’s at least one European Jew who’s standing up to say so.
L’Shana Tovah Tikah Tevuh.
I am so happy to come across this website, I am from Jamaica and is a descendant of Porteguese Jews. We have been living in Jamaica for the past 500 years and it is true that the blood line has been watered down somewhat, however, there is no mistake that we know who we are, and the younger generations who now resides in the USA and Canada are now going back to our jewish roots. Though I am of sephardi, we also have a lot of Ahkenazi jews in Jamaica in the Parish of St. Elizabeth in a district called German town. Also due to intermarriage you will find a lot of Aarons, Issacs, Da’Silva and Levys with chocolate color skins, so what, it is not the color of the skin that defines that we are a Jews. It is the fact the we were born Hebrews and we are special to Hashem.
L’Shana Tovah
Read Deuteronomy the 28 chpt it start with the blessing and the curses that Hashem would place on us if we did not go in all of his ways. In the curses GOD tell us that if we did not obey his laws what he would do to us. Deueronomy 28th chapter the 68 verse says “And the Lord shall bring thee into Egypt again with ships, by the way whereof I spake unto thee. Thou shalt see it no more again: and there ye shall be sold unto your enemies for bondnen (slaves) and bondwoman, and no man shall buy you.” This is us, this is what happen to us when we came to america. When GOD says I will bring you into Egypt this is a metaphore for(slavery) with tall Ship he is talking about slaves comming to America in the slave trade. The first ships to come to America landed in Jamestown Va and the slaves worte on the wall in Hebrew and Arameic (the trade language for the Hebrews) We are Isreal it is in our blood, that has been tainted by the slave master that rapped our women but we are his Chosen people that chose him not so in his love he punished us buy sending us in to bondage but he did not destroy us. If you go to Deuteronomy the 4th chapter start at the 26 verse and read the remains of the Chapter. GOD says that he will kick us of the promise land and scatter us among the nations and that we would serve gods of wood and stones(Jesus)gods that our forefather never new. But this is the part to get happy about. The 29th verse of the 4 chapter GOD says “BUT if from ther thou shalt seek the LORD Thy GOD thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy Heart and with all thou soul.”
What’s Up,
I attend a Hebrew Pentecostal World Wide Church called House of God Inc. We are mainly an African American Congergation, but have all types of people with various ethnic backgrounds and decents in our Temples and Congregations all of the World. House of God was founded in the early 1900’s. We currenlty have 12 Apostoles as our leaders with one Chief Apostle. We hold to the 10 Commandments of the Almighty (Including the Sabbath), Feasts, Baptisim in Yahshua/Jesus Name, eating clean meats, head pieces for women and recieving the Ruach Koesh/Holy Ghost with Bibical Edvidences of Speaking in Tongues.
I attend Temple Beyth-EL (House of God) in Nashville,Tn. 615-650-9144. As a 24 yr old African American young male I do identify myself to hold to the “Jewish/Hebrew” identy of christianty, that most churches do not teach. Feel free to contact me: MatthewSloss@Yahoo.Com
Peace
my father is half egyptian jewish half moroccan muslim and my mother is of ashkenazi jewish decent. i have fair skin and strawberry blonde hair and a small nose and most people assume i’m a bible belt christian until theymeet my dad andhe is quite dark and my mother is quite pale. people just don’t respect others feelings. both of my parents and i practice the jewish faith and ignore certain brainwashes like “jews for jesus” they are ridiculous
One of the challenges within the Jewish Community is expressing that Judaism has no Jesus. We believe in Adon*i and do not worship through a human representation of the almighty. Christian Missionaries will attempt to nail heels on this native’s feet. I am not among the ignorant. I will not be brainwashed. Hopefully, more will find faith and peace in Judaism.
I must find my Faith in a Synagogue without a crucifix. I believe that those who espouse cultural representations of Judaism, with strings attached, proselytize to the ignorant. Many of us are hungry for Faith. For those who wish to find Judaism and G-d, there are Synogogues within your Community. They run by Rabbis of all races who should be more than willing to assist in your efforts to worship and find what you seek.
In the book of Numbers, Chapter 12, a Rabbi Goldwasser preaches the story about Moses marrying a dark-skinned woman. (She is called a “Cushite” in the Torah; Rashi understands the term to mean that she had black skin).
When Moses’ sister, Miriam, criticized Moses for marrying her, God punished Miriam by giving her a disease that turned her skin as white as snow. She had to be quarantined away from the other Israelites for a week.
Sholom, may we learn to show respect, tolerance, and understanding of this Faith of ours, within this string, regardless of our complexion. I hope that all of us have a Good Pesach and become more observant and in so become better examples to our community.
I would like to just say that the post is wonderful. I just wish they would understand that not only Ethopian Jews are the only Black Jews. There are Black Jews in many different areas.
Also, the Jewish community needs to stop being so judgemental. What are the Mesianic Jews doing to anyone? The whole radical term is ridiculous. It’s like when someone calls an Orthodox Jew radical. We each have our own walk. Whatever happend to being welcoming and respectful? Try a little respect!
Anyway, GREAT POST!
I’m very grateful for having found this and other websites that document the richness of our Jewish community.
As for the racist attitudes among segments of the white identified Jewish community, I don’t have an answer except to say that I do my part to address this on a personal level with family and friends and to educate myself and support those who are educating our community.
In my own family, among those who voice racist attitudes, I’ve had some fruitful discussions about the hidden fears behind their defensiveness when it comes to considering themselves white. It seems to come down to this: if they can consider themselves ‘white,’ then they feel safer. They don’t want to think of themselves as so vulnerable. I’m not saying it’s rational, but unfortunately, it’s their defense.
I think we’re that much stronger as a full community more grounded in our true colors and in the reality of our history than to pretend that ‘passing’ will make us safer. Coming from a family (mom and dad) who lost relatives during the Holocaust, I have few illusions.
In addition, as a child, looking at a map of ancient Israel, I was struck by the thought that we were a ‘mixed’ race people. How could we not be?
We need more public wide education that reflects our full community. I’m very frustrated with the recent crop of documentaries on Jewish life that have been shown on PBS. (oh, there’s two seconds of Julius Lester!)
I was fortunate to have attended a workshop led by Loolwa Khazzoom (Tapestry) that highlighted the richness of our history and culture world-wide. Came out of there feeling ten feet tall! And to have met JJ Keki at a recent diversity conference at Tufts U. Mr. Keki is a leader of the Abayudaya who is involved in a coffee cooperative of Jews, Christians, and Muslims that is seeking a market in the US in order to help support their communities.
As others on this list have said, we need to be more welcoming and respectful and proud of who we are. Because we do have much to be proud of.
Thanks to all who’ve shared!
Salaam alaykum to my jewish cousins . I just wanted to say that white jews do not have any hebrew israelite blood in them . They are Akenazi jews from europe . Decented from a people called the Khazars who lived in Russia . They converted to Judaism for political purposes . They were a savage people that destroyed the reputation of the jewish people . They have there owm faith called Zionism . Which no real jew , christian or moslem should support . They rape and kill Palistians and treat jews of color like shit . I for one don’t like them . Jews of color have been around for thousands of years . We are the orignal man . Islam backs up the Jewish faith .
And to let everyone know . Im not a rascist . Im just telling the truth . Look it up for yourself .
First of all, the New York Times had an interesting piece entitled “Barack Obama’s Rabbi” which I read and led me to do further investigating. An interesting line from the story:
“… Chief among them was the doctrine that many white Jews are descended not from the ancient Israelites but from the Khazars, a tribe of Turkic nomads who, according to legend, converted to Judaism in the eighth or ninth century. Mainstream scholars say there is no historical evidence for such a claim, but it remains an article of faith for many Black Jews. (The claim is also a staple of anti-Israel rhetoric …)”
The link is http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/05/magazine/05rabbi-t.html?pagewanted=1&em if you’d like to check it out for yourself. Furthermore, the statement “I for one don’t like them” is a racist sentiment, whether or not you choose to believe this group of people converted to Judaism. It seems like making generalizations about a group of people would be something that Jews of color would seek to avoid.
Second, regarding the blog post: True, there are many misconceptions about who is a Jew, what Jews look like, etc. But did it ever occur to you that, in order for there to be a greater dialogue and understanding, articles like this have to appear at some point in the process? So many people who had no idea about Jews of color have now had their eyes opened and are aware that Jews are certainly not restricted to one race or ethnicity. I find it sad that this article, which could obviously (even if it is, as you charge, awkward) clear up misconceptions, is so offensive to you.
I enjoy your views on Jews of Color, this is my life. I think that the problem is ignorancy and illeteracy on the study of the vast dispersion of the Children of Israel, the
vast amount of geographical places that they have migrated
to between the time of the conflicts of the nothern and southern kingdoms, the peoples that they have come across and have embraced of different countries, and shades of colors of skin, the interwieving and diverse assimulation in these far off. These are things that I currently write about and although I classify myself a Jew of color I am not
indifferent to a jew whose tone is not the same of mine. I embrace him, because I know that he is my brother, friend
and kin. I do not assume that the Ashkenazi is my brother, I
know that for a fact that he is my brother, my friend and my kin. And this is no assumption, I know that this is a fact, and when all Jews (or descentants) knows these things as a fact through proper education, then we will hava a more
peaceful and stronger house of Israel. Look at the promise that was made to Abraham, it has expanded so far, as the sand upon the sea shores that it has confounded many. I see
the some Black Jews, says, that I am the true jew, and some
White Jews, says, that I am the only Jew, and there is no other. I once too our of ignorancy had thought these things too, but I asked the Almighty to be the apple of my eyes, and the Almighty showed me how these things came to be. So now that I know that Jewery is not merely black and white, but there are also many shades that are in-between. Now how
wonderfully is the promise of Abraham being fullfilled. How
happy is it for Israel to say that we have brothers/sisters
of so many different colors. I love my Ashkenazi brother even if he dosen’t know who I am, but I hope that one day that he will know who I am through the proper study and education, something I am looking forward to see the state of Israel do. There is so much I do for the promotion of this, and if you know any other in Israel that do the same
please contact me so that we can work together.
I have just scrolled up to Brother Lloyd’s article, posted
April 3,2009. I would like to ask in general what does the
word Semetic or Semeticism means? It is my understanding
that its prefix (Semi)is the Latin word that means half.
Half of What ? From this as some scholors have indicated,
that 4,000 B.C. the Mesopatamian area was a black civil-
ization at which time there began caucasian invasions from
the north, we bear certain truths to be self-evident.
What do we think is the result of this ? We know that in
these situation there is massive inter-mixing. Whether
through rape or freewill consent, we know that in these
situations there begins racial and cultural sexual inter-
course. Now we can see the word “Semi” in a certain sense.
Half of this, and half of that in terms of race, culture,
and religious beginnings. The next factor that we have to
consider is legitimacy. We know that this Hebraic religion
and way of life would not be easily tolorated or assimula-
ted into a Eupopean society or tribal clan at once. We could
even go as far to say that it has been asserted that Judaism
was not an official institutionalized religion in Europe until the 17th Century. One thing we do know for sure is
that Christianity was not practiced in its early beginning
openly. What do we think would happen if Judaism was attempted to be practiced in Europe in those days ? I am not
stating that judaism was attempted to be practiced in
Europe in those days, but what I am tring to establish is the beginning of the ligitimacy of peoples of Europe in
conformity with the laws of Israel. This is what is tech-
nically termed, “Jewish by Nationality”, however the Elders
in those days had a certain pre-requisite to go with this,
which was to observe the laws of Israel, and to practice the
tennets of its religious ways. Also in the laws of Israel,
it is written, he that is a stranger among you, after living
for five years, he is entitled to be joined in the house of
Israel. If a black man marries a white woman and has a child
by that woman, that child bears his last name, or visa versa
in colors. And if the father’s name is Israel them that child no matter what his color is, bears the name of the father. Yes we do know that a lot of Europeans of the cauca-
soid color did convert to Judaism. Now look even in Islam my
brother, it says, “Come to worship, Come to worship Allah.
It did not say what color of skin you had to have to worship
Allah. The same for Judahism or just about any other religion. All I am trying to do is to establish a point of
early beginnings and ligitimacy that can be pinpointed bet-
ween Europeans and Israel. I would not go as far as to say
that Europe had expounded on the practice of that religion
in those days, but to prove that a definate link was established. I know that sometimes some conceited Europeans
may like to make a Jew of color feel indifferent, but the
situations that we go through in life defines who we are,
especially in maturity, wisdom, knowledge and awareness and
love. And as it is written, unless your righteousness/
maturity exceeds that of the other, then you are no better
than he. There are so many things for the world to consider,
and when the world consider these things, then it will be
the coming of a new age. Peace be for you my brother, and I
hope that you get many European friends, and that they squeeze you tight. Remember it is also written he that sinneth against me sinneth against his own soul. Consider
that person your little brother who is out of the way, take
him by the hand and teach him. If we fail to teach those
who do not see, then where is the infinacy of our wisdom ?
If our God is the All Wise, then is he not capable of
making the unbeknown be known ? Or is it that we have failed
in his name ? Well peace for you my brother a perfect peace
for you and may the Almighty give you the perception to win
friends in a multitude. May all mankind be your friends and
may all races and colors and peoples cling unto thee !
I would really like to write more, a lot, lot, more. Well
please give me a feed back, all black and white and everyone.
Concerning the attitude of recognition of the Jew of color,
I would like to contribute the following :
Excerpts from the Zohar, The Hebrew Book of Splendor.
The Creation of Elohim : In the Beginning
When the King concieved ordaining
He engraved engravings in the luster on high
A blinding spark flashed
within the Concealed of the Concealed
from the mystery of the Infinite
a cluster of vapor in the formlessness
set in a ring
not white, not black, not red, not green
no color at all
When a band spanned, it yeilded radiant colors
Deep within the spark gushed a flow
inbuing colors below,
concealed within the concealed of the mystery of
the Infinite
The flow broke through and did not break through
its aura.
It was not known at all
until under the impact of breaking through,
one high and hidden point shone.
Beyond that point, nothing is known
So it is called Beginning,
the first command of all.
As we can see concerning Yahwey is not a Yahwey of colors
( The Infinite One ), not white, not black, not red, not green, no color at all, and this is the first command.
What color is a principle ?
As we have heard the expression: Bereshit Bara Elohim Et Ha
Shamayeem Ve Ha Aretiz.
In principle elohim created the Heavens, The Pillarstones
upon which it stands, from the Azilutic World, motioning
itself to the Beriah World, to the Yezeriah World, to the
Asiyah World, from the invisible to the visible.
The main point is the composition. For example you can have
a red motor car, a brown motor car, a green motor car, the
main purpose is the function that it serves.
Now I have been a fanitic over Black Hebrew History and
study, and I do see indications in my studies of the early
Hebrews being black, but that does not means one thing to me
because knowing Yahwey, and really knowing Yahwey, he who
says that he do, his mentality cannot be restricted to the
mentality of the tangible World ( Asiyah }.
And as I have learned of the term “Tachutonim” he who is
from above, or Spirit from up above, comes down to earth
wherein he gathers a Garment of Flesh.
The Flesh is commanded remotely by the Spirit within the
flesh, remotely as a automobile is being run.
However on the other hand this is really silly, because it
causes me to think about, The Planet Of The Apes, everyone
claiming to be the first or the original in retrospect in
giving recognition to the other.
On the other hand when we look at the infinicy of history,
take for example 4,000 B.C. wherein many scholors can identify a black civilization in Mesopotamia, Chaldea and
so forth. However if we look at it at the other hand, let us
say 8,000 B.C., because Yahwey is infinite, or 16,000 B.C.
or 24,000 B.C., we very well may could have found another
civilization other than a black one in that region going on
the cycle of time.
Could it not have been that the baton of civilization could
have been passed on from one civilization of color to the
other as time evolute ?
However the Roman Historian Tacitus, who lived about 90 A.D.
wrote in his journals, that many of his time asserts that the Jews are of an Ethiopian race and origin. This seems to
be a clear indication of what the Jew of that day or his
time had looked like. European don’t feel inferior, not in
God’s kingdom or in Man’s kingdom.
The wife of Napoleon’s Ambassador to Portugal while in that
country also said that the Moors and the Judeans looks alike. There are many things for the State of Israel to work
out, and I am quite confident in them.
Now some may say that the European ( Ashkenazi
is very racist, but I know that the European is very cunn-
ing and shrewed and I think that he will work it out, they
seem to have a mathematical irony behind them, and this is
nature unfold.
Now I have seen some Ashkenazi, that when you say hello to
them, they do not answer, well we live in a very cold world
today and they may feel justified because they don’t know
who to trust. I mean these times my feelings were really hurt, and even in the early times of Braham there was talk-
ing about the Brotherhood of man.
I really don’t know, but I believe that I should do the right, even if my brother does not do the right, until he
come around and acknowledge the love that i have in my heart for him. So now I pray for the love to spread about
in rulership amongst my brothers of different colors.
